PCW Presents The AWA World Heavyweight Champion!
Winnipeg is Home Sweet Home for the Champ!
Winnipeg, Mb – Premier Championship Wrestling remains one step ahead of the competition as the AWA World Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino will defend his title at the LID Nightclub on August 4th at Beat The Summer Heat!
This huge event comes after PCW’s last mega-event Premier Cup: X-Raided was a financial and critical success.
“Premier Cup was the most exciting athletic wrestling event in Manitoba history,” Shallcross stated. “We now have a great legacy to live up to and that is what Beat The Summer Heat will be about – legacy!”
Legacy is often a word used when discussing Steve Corino. Originally from Winnipeg, Corino has become one of the most successful and well known Manitobans in the wrestling world. He is a former National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion and former Extreme Championship Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion. On June 11th, he became only the third man in history to have won the NWA and AWA world heavyweight championships when he won the AWA title from Takao Omori!
“Steve is a true student of the business,” Shallcross continued. “He has such a tremendous respect for the traditions of wrestling. He has been one of the biggest boosters of the AWA’s resurgence on the international stage and has been defending the title all over the world.”
Corino steps in for TNA World X Division Champion ‘Fallen Angel’ Christopher Daniels to headline PCW’s Beat The Summer Heat event on August 4th. Daniels’ increasing popularity caused a scheduling conflict as he was sought by a Japanese promotion to perform that week. The ‘Fallen Angel’ is anxious to appear for PCW and will defend his championship at PCW’s infamous Back to School Bash event in the fall.
Shallcross guaranteed a future Daniels appearance, “We promised Chris Daniels would be coming to Winnipeg. And we will absolutely make that a reality. For the great fans in Winnipeg, they now have two mega-events to look forward to in the next few months.”
Corino’s appearance marks a revival of the AWA in Winnipeg. The American Wrestling Association has a long and glorious legacy as one of the top promotions on the planet in the 1970’s and 80’s. Winnipeg was one of their main centres of operation with regular AWA matches at Winnipeg Arena. It has been many years since the AWA World Championship was defended in Manitoba and Steve Corino is looking forward to returning to his hometown on August 4th for this historic event.
While his opponent for this World Heavyweight Championship match has not yet been revealed, speculation is already running rampant. On April 21st 2001, Corino lost the NWA North American championship to PCW’s own ‘Showtime’ Robby Royce and many fans are salivating at the prospects of the long-awaited rematch. On the other hand, it may be time for the King of Old School to face the Future of the business – Premier Cup Winner Kenny Omega. There are countless other wrestlers who will be demanding the World Championship opportunity.
Premier Championship Wrestling is proud to present the World Heavyweight Champion Steve Corino, August 4th only at the LID Nightclub. Tickets are on sale now. While this historic announcement will have a lasting impact on the Canadian independent scene, Shallcross promises more information will be released.
“Just as we did with the Premier Cup,” he began. “We intend to give the people a total entertainment experience. Expect more announcements and surprised to be revealed in the next few weeks.”
