This weeks WTR kicked off with a 10-bell salute to the memory of Shinya Hashimoto. For the first hour of the show, Tim and Jason discussed various topics in wrestling as well as TNA’s “No Surrender” pay per view.
After a break, WTR welcomed their surprise guest with a ring announcer style introduction listing all of the guests that had come on WTR that the guest had in common with. Steve Corino joined the show and seemed floored by Stein’s intro, calling it “Amazing.”
Jason started off in typical WTR fashion by asking Corino whom on Colt Cabana’s three-way list from the Trios Tournament he would want to be with. Corino said he only remembered April Hunter and Slyk Wagner Brown and wouldn’t want some of that.
Moving on to a serious note, Steve was asked about being in Japan right after the passing of former Zero-One owner Hashimoto. Corino said the first show was difficult but the Friday show was unbelievable and they sent Hashimoto out the right way. Corino said he owed a lot to Hashimoto for giving him his break in Japan. He said if there was no Hashimoto there would be no Steve Corino in Japan. Steve then talked about how he got into his role as the gaijin booker for Zero One and his career there. Jason asked who of the WWE releases could be in Zero One. Corino said they will be making an inquiry into bringing the Dudleys into Hustle and Matt Morgan and Kidman to Zero One.
Talk turned to CM Punk, who is one of the only people who has turned down offers to go to Japan. Corino said that Punk has made the right decision in going to WWE. Corino thinks the angle that Punk is in presently in ROH is genius because he eventually has to lose it, and it could be to anyone. Corino said as a fan he would want to go to shows to see Punk lose.
Jason asked if Corino would return to ROH despite differences with Gabe Sapolsky for one more match with Homicide. Corino said he wouldn’t say it won’t happen but at this moment he can’t see it happening. Corino said that the feud with Homicide in 2003 was based on real heat and there was chemistry between them for two guys who don’t like each other. He talked about losing his hearing in the “Bitter Friends, Stiffer enemies” match and has not yet returned.
Corino was asked about being a veteran and a teacher on the indy scene. Corino said he has been lucky to get the pushes he has, and to get to work with someone like Jay Lethal and help them get to the next level is a role he enjoys. He said wrestling needs more AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels in the business and it was the veteran’s roles to help make them. Corino said what is lacking in wrestling today is storytelling. He mentioned his storyline with Homicide as being really hot with just three matches and a story.
Jason brought up Kevin Steen, and Corino called him a “great kid.” Steve had seen videos of Steen taking a lot of bumps on his head and didn’t see a need for it. He and Kevin went out and told a story because Kevin wanted to learn. Corino called him a future star. Corino later mentioned Josh Daniels, Jay Lethal, Ricky Landell, El Generico, Roderick Strong, Bboy, Matt Striker, Steve Madison and others as the future of the sport and said there is a great future for Pro Wrestling. Talk turned to the AWA. Corino said they were in the building stage, with a lot of trial and error but there is a commitment to get more good promotions. He feels it is 2 or 3 years away from being a major player but there are some good shows and companies. He said he was proud to be AWA champion and it is hard to rebuild a name that has been dead for 15 years.
Jason asked about Corino’s thoughts on the ECW events now that they have happened. Steve thought One Night Stand was great. He said he didn’t do the events because he wasn’t sure how it would go and prefers to look forward instead of back. Corino said that he wouldn’t do an ECW reunion even with how well done they were, and that his ECW reunion dream match, if he did one would be against Taz because they never finished their feud.
Jason asked about Corino’s new haircut. Steve said that it’s 2005 and he wanted a change for his 10th year of wrestling so he went with the new look. He thinks it makes him look more like a banker and was a good thing. Talk turned to bleeding, namely Teddy Hart commenting on Corino needing to bleed. Corino said that you can’t take Teddy’s word for anything as evidenced by his excuses for skipping JAPW shows. He said he wouldn’t do anything different in his career because it made him who he is and has gotten him to a point where he makes a comfortable living and is happy with his life. He thinks the blood may have been too much but he was doing what he was told to do and that some people are good at high spots, some are good at bleeding. He said blood today has to be there for a special reason, and people who do it just to bleed aren’t doing the job the right way.
Steve talked about how his son Colby hardly watches wrestling anymore, and shared the well-known story of Colby punching out Shinjiro Ohtani. Jason asked a chat room question about the internet. Steve said it is a good tool for information and he has no problem with people’s opinions but that people should have more fun and enjoy it. He said that he likes to be surprised at shows so he doesn’t read news sites but there are fans that like that. Jason specifically brought up Green Lantern Fan, who Steve said is one of the bad ones. He gave an example of GLF instant messaging him on AOL saying he was sorry about Hashimoto. He said he appreciated the sympathy until GLF went on the JAPW message board getting people worried about whether he would show up for the show. He said he isn’t a hard guy to find and instead of doing that could have just instant messaged or e-mailed Steve to see if he was coming. He said every time he starts to like GLF he does something stupid and that he isn’t a bad guy but makes bad decisions. He also talked about someone being a second rate Green Latern Fan at the JAPW show. In terms of the internet in general, he said everyone is entitled to their opinion and favorites and he doesn’t take it personally. He also talked about different types of fans and working in front of them. Listen to the full show by clicking here!
Jason asked about Steve going back to where he was born, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada for PCW. He said he is looking forward to going home and said that Canadian fans love you if you were born there. He wants to take Colby up there and he has warned his son that the mosquito’s are as big as Colby. Christopher Daniels is wrestling on the show as well and Corino said he can’t wrestle Daniels because Daniels has been on a streak of great matches and he doesn’t want to end it.
On the return of World-1 Steve said it wasn’t something he was planning on doing but the opportunity came up to do it in a small venue. He said they are just going to have fun with it, add old school with a twist and they launched online tv at www.world1wrestling.com. He said that being an 18 and over show in a bar will be fun, and more of an adult show without being offensive. Jason mentioned Marcus Dowling, who Corino called one of the most underrated guys in the world who is a great thinker and will be a great booker. Corino said Dowling will be like Gabe Sapolsky in five or ten years.
Corino talked about Pro Wrestling Unplugged, saying the heavyweight title tournament finals between Trent Acid and Homicide was unbelievable. Jason asked about Corino’s various roles – promoter, trainer, booker, commentator – and similarities to CM Punk. Corino said he loves doing the various duties because he gets to learn and grow from it, and Punk is the same way.
Jason asked about Alex Law and Ricky Landell. Corino called them great kids and said Alex just graduated from cop school so he isn’t working as much as Alex. He is proud of both of them, and talked about how great Alex did against Charlie Haas at JAPW. Corino talked about how wrestling has changed and is going back towards more pure wrestling and less sports entertainment because there aren’t many big guys out there.
A fan asked why Steve hasn’t worked for WWE. Steve said it sounds strange but he doesn’t need to work there: He's made a great living without working there and is a homebody. He doesn’t want to be on the road more than he has to be and would rather be home with his son. He also doesn’t think he would fit in there well, as he is outspoken, doesn’t have the right body and likes to take his time in matches. When asked about TNA Steve said that he would be more in favor of it now that Vince Russo is not booking. When he had some matches there they had no plan for him so he didn’t feel there was any point in being there and it was wasting their money. Listen to the full show by clicking here!
Jason asked about Canadian Wrestler Juggernaut. The Zero One office wanted to bring in someone “big and ugly” and Juggernaut came to mind. Steve said he got along great with Jugg and Dr. Luther in ECCW in Canada and thinks Zero One should bring Juggernaut back. He said Jugg is always entertaining.
Talk turned to family, and Steve said that it is tough balancing wrestling and parenting but he and Colby have fun and Colby is the best kid he could have asked for. He said Colby is the reason he has been successful and his head is on straight. Steve said that guys like AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels know that family comes first and that wrestling is your job and your family will always be there.
Jason asked about Lance Storm calling Corino a “Manager in tights” and how Don Callis rubbed it in. Steve said it was at a time he didn’t want to be a manager and thought Paul Heyman had lost faith in him. He said he and Lance get along great now. In terms of Lance’s school he said that if you are going to be taught by anybody it should be Lance Storm.
A fan asked who Steve Corino would face if he could go back in time, Corino said Tully Blanchard because he was his first favorite heel. Corino said he would love to face him now even if they are both past their primes. Jason said the name “Keanu Reeves” which resulted in an hilarious reaction from Corino. Steve went over his “hate list” that includes the entire city of Detroit and Paris, France. Steve suggested going to Disneyworld in Orlando for vacation as you will see Spanky there. Spanky and Corino share a birthday as well with Bob Hope, JFK and Melissa Etheridge. When asked what match he would like to see again, Corino said Flair and Steamboat even now could probably outwork 95% of the wrestlers out there and that he wishes they had done it at Wrestlemania 20 as rumored.
Talk turned to Dusty Rhodes and their many battles. Corino called him a “second father” and that he would have been a mid card ECW wrestler without Dusty who taught him a lot inside and outside the business. Steve then talked about JAPW and how much fun he has there. He really enjoyed his match with Jay and Papa Lethal on the weekend.
Corino explained the reason for “Ichiban” on his tights which he stole from Hulk Hogan, who he saw do it 20 years ago in Japan. He told a funny story about an eight-year-old girl called him “Itchy Bum” the first time he wore the tights which caught on, and that Jonny Storm thinks that is hilarious. A fan asked what would be Corino’s favorite “Birthday Surprise” opponent and Corino said Spanky. Corino turned it around and asked the fans listening where his remote control is.
Steve plugged his website www.stevecorino.com which has his upcoming matches. He thanked everyone who tuned in. Things wrapped up with a road story about ghosts in cheap motels, and then an odd conversation between Jason and Steve about snakes and spiders and why Colby can’t have them as pets before Steve said goodbye.

The remote, which was a universal remote for a number of electronic devices in the Corino household, was discovered under the vacuum cleaner.
