As you all should be aware by now ‘The Rise and Fall of ECW’ DVD is on sale now and selling like hotcakes. From what I have heard it is the best selling Wrestling DVD going. It is the first Wrestling DVD (EVER) to hit #1 on Amazon and is sold out in most stores. Fear not if you haven’t bought a copy yet, I’m sure they are shipping more of them as you read this. With the incredible sales of the DVD, rumours are flying about an ECW re-launch, but before I get to that let me give you my thoughts on the DVD.
I haven’t actually watched the entire DVD set yet. It’s a 6-hour 2-disc set. I haven’t watches the matches but I’ve seen the whole history/documentary portion, which to me is the best part. The first 3-hour disc gives you a complete look back at the history of ECW. It covers all of the major turning points in the company’s history and looks at most of its’ major stars. This history is not told to us by Vince McMahon or by a TV executive producer, it’s told to us by Paul Heyman and the people who worked in ECW. This is the biggest selling point to me, because it comes across so honest. We hear the story of ECW directly from Paul Heyman, Tommy Dreamer, Taz, The Dudley’s, Chris Jericho, Rhyno, Myself, RVD, among others. This is the tale of ECW by those who worked there, and loved it as much as you did.
I genuinely got choked up watching this DVD and for the first time since I retired from the ring, missed performing. ECW was a once in a lifetime experience and I am so glad I was a part of it. ECW was a combination of an incredible creating force, a second to none dedication and work ethic, the most loyal enthusiastic fans the business has ever seen, and a special time and place in the industry that all came together to make ECW what it was; MAGIC. WCW put me on the map in this industry with my 3-Title Push, WWE gave me worldwide recognition and fame, but ECW made Lance Storm, and for that I will always be grateful. I became a performer in ECW, cut my first decent promo in ECW, became a booker and fell in love with the creative process in ECW. When I look back on my 14-year career, ECW is the highlight, and no one else even comes close.
The big difference was, you didn’t just work for ECW you were a part of it. We all felt like we had a stake in the company, we were part of a team, part of a family. This feeling comes across so well in the DVD. It’s a shame they couldn’t have interviewed some of the fans, because they were an important part of the family as well. We were all working together to make ECW a success. It is often joked that Paul was the Cult leader and we had all drank his ‘Magic Cool-Aid’, but I don’t think there is a fan of ECW or one of the boys who worked their that wouldn’t jump at the chance for just one more glass of Cool-Aid, and I think the sales of this DVD prove that.
So with the success of the DVD what is next for ECW? I’ve heard talk (from fans and internet sources, this doesn’t come from the office, so don’t get too excited) of an ECW Brand extension with ECW getting a Velocity type 1-hour weekly time slot, a renewed push for former ECW talent, and even an ECW PPV. I’ve got mixed feelings on all of these because as much as I loved ECW I still think ECW was more than just the sum of its’ parts. ECW was a special time and place; I don’t know if that magic could ever be recaptured. I would rather see an ECW PPV over the ECW Brand extension because I think there is more chance of recapturing that magic for one night than on a weekly basis under a WWE umbrella. ECW was all about revolt and individuality, I don’t know if you can do that as a subsidiary of what you are suppose to be rebelling against.
In closing, I want to thank everyone who ever supported ECW. It was a great time and it was all because of the crazy, rabid, hardcore fans. We gave our all to you, and in return you gave us yours, and for that I thank you. For all the rest of you out there go pick up this DVD and see what you missed.
Till next week,
Lance
